A Programme for the teaching of English Comprehension
Our school, Gaelscoil Chluain Dolcáin, will be adopting the Building Bridges of Understanding Programme in the Spring of 2014. Pupils from Ranganna 3 to 6 will be participating in the programme initially and it will be rolled out to Ranganna 1 to 6 in the school year 2014 - 2015. Building Bridges of Understanding is a whole school approach to the teaching of comprehension devised by Dr Martin Gleeson, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick and Dr Ann Courtney, University of Harvard, Connecticut, U.S.A. Drawing on current research regarding effective comprehension instruction it's primary focus is the teaching of comprehension with the ultimate aim of enabling children to become self-regulated, strategic readers. This programme was pioneered in nine schools in Limerick and Cork initially and now has been rolled out nationwide. Feed regarding the effectiveness of the programme has been phenominal and Building Bridges of Understanding should greatly help the pupils of this school to become better readers.
