Céadaoin an Luaithrigh
Ar ar lá seo caitheann daoine Luaithreach ar a n-éadain i bhfoirm na Croise. Is siombail é seo go bhfuil na daoine seo ag déanamh troscadh don 40 lá roimh Domhnach na Cásca. An Carghas a thugtar ar an 40 lá seo.
Blianta ó shin níor ith na daoine feoil don 40 lá. D'ith siad éisc.
Ní bhíodh acu gach lá ach trí bhéile, dinnéar gan feoil agus dhá bheile beaga.
On this day people wear ashes on their forehead in the form of a cross. It is a symbol to others that they have undertaken some form of penance for the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday. This 40 day period of penance is called Lent.
Years ago, people abstained from meat for Lent. Instead they ate fish. Their daily diet consisted of one main meal, without meat, and two smaller ones.
